Yoshitomo Nara was born on December 5th, 1959 in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, Japan.

“I was lonely, and music and animals were a comfort.”

Growing up as the youngest kid meant that Nara had to find his own ways to fill up his freetime. His interest in music, animals, and western pop culture were all elements that influenced his work.

Hirosaki is one of the three places Nara resided in throughout his early life.
